The modern Mediterranean beach style of Onyx delivers impeccably on the brief of a “warm, comfortable, light, functional, unbreakable private oasis.”

A stunning showcase of individuality, liveability and outstanding contemporary craftsmanship, LGB (compromising builder Liam Gilligan, designer Hyaesil Gilligan, and their small, focused team) has created an inviting and timeless residence, underpinned by a dedication to maintaining the integrity of its bespoke design.

Beyond a deliberately unassuming entry, with a small frontage that affords absolute privacy, the highly considered floorplan of the house wraps around a 100,000-litre pool to create the ambience and aesthetics of a private resort.

The design enhances the garden and mountain aspect of the space at every opportunity, with each room positioned to take advantage of the natural light through an abundance of windows, and generous banks of louvres to capture the prevailing breezes. The separated master suite overlooks the pool, outdoor gazebo and outdoor bathroom, in a flawless interpretation of a luxurious tropical hideaway.

“Everywhere you are in the house natural light filters through ever so beautifully.”

The high raked ceilings (four metres at the highest point), substantial proportions and generous clerestory and transom windows of the interior living spaces achieve a subtle, organic harmony of form, function and light. A cohesive marriage of natural features ties the interior and exterior elements together through the timber joinery, polished concrete floors, feature blocks and natural stones.

The expansive 4-metre kitchen island bench made from quartzite stone is a striking showpiece of minimalistic, contemporary craftsmanship, using layering texture to provide warmth, while the curves from the lounge and the dining table communicate a perfect balance to the interior of the house.

“Subtle curves from the lounge and the dining table give a perfect balance to the interior of the house.”

The master en-suite was one of the key features of the project, with the designer and clients refining and reshaping the concept until everyone was satisfied.

It uses the same quartzite as the kitchen, with back-to-back gently curved vanities on a quartzite tower to allow the hero material to star in a stunning collaboration of elements and craftsmanship. In the laundry and other bathrooms materials were limited to provide a uniform finish, which adds to the drama of the master ensuite.

“Feature lighting throughout creates a warm, inviting ambience for both day and night.”

In alignment with the clients’ aesthetic vision, Hyaesil’s timeless neutral interior palette allows the furnishings to bring in the colour.

The lighting – carrying through from the wall, table, pendant and floor – is designed to provide a faultless ambient transition from day to night.

Advanced technology throughout the house includes security cameras, in-ceiling audio, 18kw solar and wired-for electric car charger.

“In the outdoor area, not an inch of space has been wasted, with outdoor seamlessly blurring to the interiors.”

In Far North Queensland homes the outdoor area is king, and Onyx utilised every inch of space with great intention, blurring the connective lines between interior and exterior to deliver unified al fresco living.

The pool is a triumph of ingenious design, incorporating flawlessly into its surroundings, and the statement off-form concrete walls and seat overlook the beautiful Andrew Prowse garden, creating an inviting reading nook or a place of tranquil contemplation.

“The clients came up with the brilliant idea to incorporate a low wall into the pool design using copper spouts as a water feature.”

In a design that evolved over the life of the build, Onyx speaks volumes to the clients’ exacting eye for detail and LGB’s enduring pursuit of excellence through the use of high-quality materials and impressive craftsmanship.

The result is a tribute to the collaborative process and the achievement of a unique, uncompromising home destined to provide generations of pleasure.
