Scope of Project

Our Moore Street Interior Design Project was a welcome challenge to the team at Liam Gilligan Builders. The project was given a small budget with a very specific brief of the space which meant each item purchased was carefully scrutinised to ensure it fell perfectly within the expectations of our client.

This house was originally designed by renowned architect Gabriel Poole, and displays a modern Australian beach house feel. The client, being of Danish roots, wanted us to incorporate their heritage into this home without taking away from the original design.

Outcome

We were given a budget of $25,000 for this project, so to ensure we stayed within the budget, we used some of the existing furniture and paired it with both affordable and luxury furniture and homewares. Whilst design was of the utmost importance, the client also required some very practical features such as having a desk in the lounge area. This posed a challenge as ideally we would not have incorporated a workspace within an open plan living space. To find a happy medium within the design and practicality requirements, we chose to use the existing desk that still matches with the other existing furniture, bringing with it the Danish influence, placing a vintage West Germany vase to distract the strong presence.

As this particular home is used as a second/holiday house by our clients, we needed to ensure that our design choices were going to be practical for extended periods of non-use, so it was important we chose items that would not deteriorate if not being attended to. We opted to curate a number of artwork prints and paintings to display throughout the house that symbolised their Danish heritage,
however we also added locally made hand-crafted custom wall hangings to several other bedrooms that represented the original designers vision of modern Australia beach house.

When choosing materials to use within this home, the modern Australian beach house and Danish influence often overlapped, meaning we could meet both expectations when choosing certain items. Both exert a minimalistic, clutter free vibe with natural and light colours. We chose neutral colours in many of our larger furnishings and homewares and opted to add a splash of colour in smaller items such as pillows and flora. Adding colour with smaller items means the clients can update colours regularly without needing to outlay large costs, giving the home an easy adaptability.
